When we talk about general aviation, getting the right to fly a multi-engine aircraft is the ultimate achievement for an aspiring pilot. Throughout the years, companies such as Piper and Beechcraft have played a substantial role in creating twin-engine aircraft that every pilot today has flown at some point in their training.

Looking forward, there’s a twin-engine trainer that has become very sought-after among pilots. In 2002, Diamond Aircraft Industries first flew their twin-engine aircraft referred to as the Diamond DA42 Twin Star.

However, what makes this aircraft one-of-a-kind? Well, first of all, the airframe of the Diamond DA42 Twin Star is massively made up of carbon composite materials and is geared with a Garmin G1000 glass cockpit out of the factory. How awesome is that? 

Apart from upgraded cockpit avionics and new material, the DA42 is one of the few aircraft, which utilizes diesel fuel rather than using AVGAS. It notices an excellent improvement in fuel use. More development on the Diamond DA42 Twin Star includes Autoland, flight envelop protection, and fly-by-wire capabilities. 

History of the Diamond DA42 Twin Star

Keep in mind that the Diamond DA42 Twin Star was certified in Europe in 2004 and in the US in 2005. The aircraft itself is composed of carbon composite material and geared with a Garmin 1000 glass cockpit. As mentioned earlier, it was the first diesel-ran fixed-wing aircraft to make a continuous crossing of the North Atlantic, in only 12.5 hours, along with standard fuel consumption of 5.74 gallons per hour. 

Designs and Variants of Diamond DA42 Twin Star

The DA42 aircraft are created in various variants based on the customer’s needs. For instance, the DA42 MPP is a multi-role aircraft geared with the latest tracking, sensor technology, and a high-tech camera system.

On the other hand, Dominator II is a remotely controlled aerial vehicle variant that is based on the DA42 aircraft. The aircraft was created by Aeronautics Defense System from Israel. Further, the DA42 NG variant is geared with more powerful AE 300 engines. The DA42-IV is an enhanced variant equipped with wiring fairings, new propellers, and aerodynamic clean-ups.

It’s worth mentioning that the Diamond DA42 Twin Star is a twin-engine light aircraft integrating semi-monocoque fuselage. The aircraft’s structure is made of high-strength, ultra-light materials. The low wing cantilever design incorporates outboard aerofoils along with a plain outboard flap, inboard split flap, and trim tabs. 

Meanwhile, the tail area integrates a rudder with trim tabs, elevators, and T-tail. 

Avionics and Cockpit 

Diamond DA42 Twin Star’s cockpit houses two crew members. The fully integrated glass cockpit is geared with Garmin 1000 avionics system. The suite incorporates two big-format 10 inches color TFT displays and GFC700 or KAP140 Automatic Flight Control System.

The screen then displays the information on terrain shading, weather, and traffic. It’s worth mentioning that the modular system, along with open architecture, enables the integration of added mission avionics. 

The cockpit itself is also geared with the following:

  • Garmin GDC74 Integrated Digital Air Data Computer
  • Communication and navigation systems 
  • Engine or airframe interface unit
  • Dual flight controls
  • GPS
  • Garmin Integrated Mode S Transponder
  • Solid-state Altitude and Heading Reference System 

Landing Gear, Cabin, and Engines

The aircrafts’ rear section is presented with expansive split fold-down chairs for two passengers. Moreover, the folding rear seats and 4-way baggage space enable the carriage of various payloads with utmost comfort. The Diamond DA42 Twin Star also boasts a big rear door for loading and unloading bulk cargo. 

It’s also offered with other engine configurations. For instance, the DA41 TDI model is tailored with TAE Centurion 2.0 Turbo Diesel Engines. On the other hand, DA42 L360 comes along with Lycoming I0-360 engines.  

Did you know that this aircraft is geared with a hydraulically retractable landing gear? Every landing gear unit is suited with a single tire. The solid landing gear provides low maintenance and reliability for its users. 

Overall Performance

The Diamond DA42 Twin Star can fly at a maximum altitude of eighteen thousand feet. The best part about it is that it can soar at a rate of 5.0 meters per second. The aircraft also has a maximum cruise speed of 365 kilometers per hour. Its stall speed is 124 kilometers per hour.

Hence, the Diamond DA42 Twin Star features a standard range of 1,470 kilometers and reaches a distance of 2,245 kilometers with a long-range tank.
