Did you know that all of the Cessna Citation family, particularly the model line 5XX, are based on the first business jet created by the company way back in 1969? Cessna Citation is the title of the innovative straight-wing line of jets developed by the Cessna Aircraft Company, all of which has transformed from the very first Cessna FanJet, correspondingly, Cessna Citation I.
Introducing the Original Citation
Not all are aware of this, but the Cessna Citation airplane’s predecessors have been registered as FanJet500. Way back in 1968, Cessna Aircraft Company publicized its plans to create an 8-seat business jet airplane that would be ideal for maneuvers from shorter airports.
The company was striving to place the airplane in the light to medium twin turbo-prop market instead of the current business jet market. Most business jets during that period can’t operate from the Shor landing field.
The flight of the very first model of Cessna FanJet happened on September 15, 1969.
The completed aircraft was debuted along with the new name Citation (Model 500) after a longer-than-anticipated development certification program. That was the time when the brand name Cessna Citation 500 was tried, and a series of modifications to the design occurred.
In September 1971, Cessna Citation 500 obtained its FAA Certification. It was more than 120 knots than the Lear 25 along with turbofan engine instead of turbojet engines like those powered the modern Learjet 25 and straight instead of swept wings.
Unhurried cruising speed leads to strange nicknames like “Nearjet” or “Slowtation” in the aviation media.
Eventually, the expansion of the Cessna FanJet has transported into production of Cessna Citation I airplane. Cessna Citation I’s overall design was quite different and still pretty much the same to the previous CessnaFanJet. Still, Citation I was recently referred to as Cessna Citation 500. In the end, it was rebranded and called Cessna Citation I.

It’s worth mentioning that the Cessna Citation 500 was powered by two Pratt and Whitney Canada JT15D-1 turbofan engines. Such engines and the straight wings of the aircraft make the Citation cruise at substantially slower speeds compared to other business jets. That’s why it’s referred to as “Slowtation.
Designed by the Cessna Aircraft Company in Kansas, the Citation line of a business jet is composed of numerous unique aircraft families, along with the Citation I building the groundwork for all future models. After getting its FAA certification, a total of 377 aircraft were designed before the production concluded in 1985.
By 2018, most used and pre-owned models of 500s were valued at $300,000. The first years after its certification, the Citation I was improved along with a wider wingspan (47.1 feet), higher gross weights, and thrust reversers. After production concluded, it was built into Citation II or Bravo and Citation V, Encore, or Ultra.

Other Citation Models You May Like to Consider
- Model 550
Also referred to as the Model 550, Citation II followed the Cessna 500. This aircraft features a redesigned cabin with a room for one more passenger. Like its predecessor, it has a single-pilot variant known as the Citation II or SP.
This aircraft was produced from 1978 to 199 and had a more robust and stronger Pratt and Whitney Canada JT15D-4 engines. It also features a standard cruise speed of 346 knots, a climb rate of 3,070 feet per minute, a range of 1,378 nautical miles, and needs at least 4,466 feet to take off and 2,737 to land.
- Super II
The Citation S/II or Super II was produced in 1983 as an enhanced version of the Citation II. It has a cabin that’s the same to that of the Citation II but has a much deeply swept wing, more powerful engines, and bigger fuel capacity. Its engines are equipped with an upgraded Pratt and Whitney JT15D-4B engines.
Ultimately, there is Citation Bravo designed on the same basic airframe and geared with enhanced engines, an improved cabin, upgraded landing gear, and an upgraded avionics system. It also comes geared with two Pratt and Whitney Canada PW530A engines.
