Honeywell AW139 is a medium type of twin-turbine helicopter

What is the Honeywell AW139?

Previously referred to as AB139, the AW139 is a medium type of twin-turbine helicopter that was created by Bell Agusta Aerospace. They are a joint venture of AgustaWestland and Bell Helicopter Textron of the US.

In 2005, Bell publicized that it was selling its share I the AB139 program to AgustaWestland. The helicopter was then renamed AW139 after the sale in 2006. 

The AW139 is accessible in both military and civil configurations and can carry at least fifteen passengers or 2,500 kilograms of useful load. Civil uses include:

  • offshore oil support
  • law enforcement
  • utility
  • passenger transport 

Other roles include firefighting, cargo lift, and search and rescue. In 2011, over five hundred AW139 helicopters were delivered, and over four hundred are in service in at least fifty different countries. 

Many different global firms are involved in the program, such as Honeywell of the US, Pratt and Whitney Canada, Liebherr of Germany, PZL Swidnik of Poland, Kawasaki of Japan, and many others.

Along with BA609, the AW139 is designed at the Final Assembly Line of Agusta in their Vergiate plant in Italy. Its assembly line has been designed at the Agusta Aerospace Corporation plant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Further, did you know that the first AW139 created at the new facility was brought in 2006? The second assembly line was included in 2008. Every component and part for both lines come from the same sources, and the aircraft is pretty much the same, whether it’s assembled in the United States or Italy. 

What are the Important Features of Honeywell AW139? 

Below are the crucial features you may like to know about the Honeywell AW139: 

  • Engine

The Honeywell AW139 is motorized by two PT6C-67C turboshaft engines from Pratt and Whitney along with FADEC (full authority digital engine control). These engines feature a maximum ongoing power of 1,142 kilowatts each and provide an all-out cruise speed of 290 kilometers per hour, as well as a maximum range of 750 kilometers without reserves. 

Further, a safe flight is 100% guaranteed with one engine inoperative at maximum take-off weight thanks to the engine’s power reserve. 

  • Cockpit

Have we already mentioned that the Honeywell AW139 features a Honeywell Primus Epic modular or integrated glass cockpit? The best part here is that the system is provided in four configurations:

  • a search and rescue version
  • IFR (instrument flight rules) four-axis digital AFCS (automatic flight control system)
  • IFR three-axis AFCS
  • Basic VFR (visual flight rules) 

Take note that the IFR models feature three or four Honeywell DU-1080 8” X 10” active-matrix liquid crystal displays. Further, the AMLCDs flat panel display offers innovative graphics generation abilities, and the two cursor control devices offer added control. 

Its system architecture is designed on two modular avionics units that house the processing for most functions in the system. Powerful computer processing can be shared due to numerous tasks that recently need individual computer platforms by incorporating the functions into an MAU. 

The system itself also features a strong central maintenance computer function, offering operations with a huge level of system maintenance and troubleshooting support. Maintenance personnel may utilize the cockpit displays or a laptop to do avionics, sensor calibration, and aircraft rigging systems diagnostics. 

  • Design 

The fully articulated main motor, along with a 4-bladed canted tail rotor of Honeywell AW139 offers extreme tail rotor ground clearance. Moreover, the durable nose-wheel tricycle landing gear is highly retractable for better and higher speeds. 

You will also find standard full seats and systems, while an icing protection structure is discretionary. High-speed refuelling and low-noise signature are possible from both sides. 

  • Overall performance

The Honeywell AW139 helicopter can soar at a rate of 10.9 meters for seconds. The cruise and maximum speeds of this helicopter are 306 kilometers per hour and 310 kilometers per hour, accordingly. 

Take note that its service ceiling and maximum ranges are 6,096 meters and 1,250 kilometers. On the other hand, its maximum endurance is five hours and fifty-six minutes. The Honeywell AW139 weighs at least 3,622 kilograms, and its maximum take-off weight would be 6,400 kilograms.
